Grande Prairie, AB poem

Catherine McLaughlin read her poem “transformer” at a meeting of city council in Grande Prairie, Alberta on April 1.

transformer

someone told me that
a raven perched
on the power-pole
transformer
at city hall

from her desk
she saw a man
ride the cherry picker
then slowly descend
his outstretched arms
cradling the corpse

the workers gathered
regarded raven with curiosity
and awe
noted his curled, charred toes
then they named him

I’ve read that ancient people
called raven
the transformer

today
he shut down
city hall
for thirty minutes
